Solar Impulse Plane

Technology: The Solar Impulse plane is constructed with ultra-light materials and boasts 17,000 integrated solar cells in its wings, supplying renewable energy to four electric motors. It utilizes energy-dense lithium batteries that charge during the day, enabling nighttime flight.

Environmental Credentials: The Solar Impulse plane achieved the monumental feat of completing the first-ever around-the-world solar flight from 2015 to 2016. Its mission is to inspire and raise awareness about the significance and potential of clean tech and renewable energy sources.

The Engineers: Bertrand Piccard, an engineer behind the Solar Impulse plane, brings his aeronautical engineering background and a family legacy of exploration to the project. André Borschberg, another engineer involved in the Solar Impulse project, has a mechanical engineering background and valuable experience in the aerospace industry.

RoboBee

Technology: RoboBee is an advanced autonomous drone robotic pollinator with GPS, high-resolution cameras, and artificial intelligence capabilities. Its underside features a layer of horsehair coated with a sticky gel. As it flies from flower to flower, pollen grains adhere to its surface and are transferred to subsequent flowers, facilitating pollination.

Environmental Credentials: In the face of rising food production demands and potential declines in bee populations, RoboBees offers a solution by assisting farmers in enhancing pollination and increasing crop yields. Farmers can mitigate the potential negative impacts of pollinator shortages on agriculture by deploying these robotic pollinators. Additionally, RoboBees promote genetic diversity and improve overall crop quality.

The Engineer: Eijiro Miyako, the creator of RoboBee, has an engineering background in chemistry. He is a researcher at Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). His expertise lies in developing innovative technologies and solutions using materials and chemical processes.

Insect Wind Turbines

Technology: Introducing FlexiWings, wind turbine blades inspired by insect wings. Their pliable material flexes with the wind and centrifugal effect, constantly optimizing pitch angles for increased efficiency.

Environmental Credentials: FlexiWings boast a remarkable 35% improvement in energy production efficiency. If commercialized, they could offer a viable and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.

The Engineer: Vincent Cognet is a physicist known for his research and work at Paris-Sorbonne University. With a focus on renewable energy and innovative technologies, he has made notable contributions to the field of insect wind turbines.

Seabin

Technology: Seabin is a highly effective solution in the form of a floating bin. It utilizes a submersible water pump that draws water from the surface and passes it through an internal bag, effectively capturing debris. With a power supply from a 110/220v outlet, the pump can displace an impressive 25,000 liters of water per hour.

Environmental Credentials: Seabin is purposefully designed to combat ocean pollution by targeting discarded items in marinas, docks, yacht clubs, and commercial ports. Its innovative design also allows for the potential collection of a percentage of oils and pollutants on the water’s surface, further enhancing its environmental impact.

The Engineers: Pete Ceglinski and Andrew Turton, the Australian co-founders of the Seabin Project, have engineering backgrounds in product design. They have expertise in developing innovative solutions for environmental challenges, specifically focusing on ocean pollution and marine conservation.
