Course Overview

This course aims to equip students with a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles and practical applications of flow measurement and the use of flowmeters.

The course is designed for engineers, technicians, system integrators, and technical leaders responsible for designing, implementing, or maintaining systems that require flow measurement. It is intended to provide them with the necessary knowledge and skills to understand the principles and practices of flow measurement and the use of flowmeters.

The course is composed of 12 modules.

Module 1: Introduction to Fluid Flow

  • Units and dimensions
  • Properties of fluids in motion – pressure, velocity, density, viscosity, mass and volumetric flow rate, flux, etc.
  • Nature of fluid – compressible and incompressible fluid
  • Hydrostatic equilibrium and head
  • Barometric equation
  • Pascal’s law
  • Bernoulli’s equation

Module 2: Fluid Flow Phenomenon

  • Basics of fluid flow – potential flow, boundary layer, velocity field
  • Velocity gradient, rate of shear, shear stress
  • Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids
  • Viscosity, kinematic viscosity, momentum flux
  • Turbulence in fluid flow – Reynolds number, laminar flow, turbulent flow

Module 3: Introduction to Fiscal Metering and Instruments

  • Fiscal metering and instruments – basics of custody transfer
  • Application of measuring instruments – data processing
  • Calculation techniques for fiscal quantities
  • Procedure, algorithms for processing fiscal data
  • Calibration of fiscal measuring instruments
  • Cost benefits of fiscal metering

Module 7: Flowmeters for Solid Particles and Multiphase Flow Measurement

  • Flowmeters for solids
  • Belt-Type solid flowmeters, slurries

  • Introduction to multiphase flow measurement
  • Basic concepts of multiphase flows and multiphase flowmeters
  • Flow conditioners and operational issues

Module 8: Operating Procedures and Maintenance of Flowmeters and Documentation

  • Installation, commissioning, maintenance of flow measuring instruments – start-up, shutdown, and operating conditions
  • Introduction to calibrations and maintenance of flow measuring instruments
  • Documentation procedure and documentation control
  • Precautions in maintenance and preventive maintenance
  • Limitations in operating flowmeters

Module 9: Open-Channel Flow Devices

  • Weirs and notches
  • Weir precautions and maintenance

  • Flume – terminology and uses

Module 10: Positive-Displacement Meters

  • Piston and rotating-vane meters

Module 11: Custody Transfer Instruments

  • Sampling and analysis

Module 12: Other Equipment in Fiscal Flow Metering

To obtain a certificate of completion for EIT’s Professional Certificate of Competency, students must achieve a 65% attendance rate at the live, online fortnightly webinars.  Detailed summaries/notes can be submitted in lieu of attendance.  In addition, students must obtain a mark of 60% in the set assignments which could take the form of written assignments and practical assignments. Students must also obtain a mark of 100% in quizzes.  If a student does not achieve the required score, they will be given an opportunity to resubmit the assignment to obtain the required score.

You are expected to spend approximately 5-8 hours per week learning the course content. This includes attending fortnightly webinars that run for about 90 minutes to facilitate class discussion and allow you to ask questions. This program has a 65% attendance requirement in the live webinars in order to graduate from the program. 
If you are unable to attend the live webinars, you have the option of watching the recording of completed webinars and sending a summary of what you have learnt from the webinar to the Learning Support officer.  The summaries go towards your attendance requirement for the program.

This program is run online on an intensive part-time basis and has been designed to fit around full-time work. It will take three months to complete.

We understand that sometimes work commitments and personal circumstances can get in the way of your studies, so if at any point you feel that you are struggling with the pace of the course or finding a particular module challenging, you are encouraged to contact your designated Learning Support Officer for assistance.
