Delight Kadzuraumera, an engineer at RIOZIM in Zimbabwe, shares how EIT’s Professional Certificate of Competency in Instrumentation, Automation & Process Control has sharpened his skills, boosted his career, and enabled him to contribute to Zimbabwe’s evolving energy sector.

For Delight Kadzuraumera, the Professional Certificate of Competency in Instrumentation, Automation & Process Control from the Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT) was more than just an academic pursuit—it was a practical tool that significantly enhanced his engineering capabilities.

Before taking the course, he had a solid foundation in instrumentation, but the program allowed him to sharpen his skills in real-world scenarios that he regularly faced in his role as an engineer at RIOZIM, a company at the forefront of Zimbabwe’s mining and energy sectors.

Delight’s primary area of growth was in troubleshooting faulty instruments, an essential skill in his profession. Through the course, he learned more advanced methods of fault diagnosis and instrument calibration, which became vital in his daily work.

One key area of focus was gaining proficiency in using troubleshooting equipment, such as process calibrators, which helped him identify and resolve issues in controllers and other instrumentation quickly and efficiently. This newfound ability to confidently navigate complex systems directly contributed to his ability to handle tasks independently and with greater precision.

The hands-on approach of the course also improved his communication with colleagues. As his technical vocabulary expanded, he found himself better able to engage with controllers and process calibrators.

“The program allowed me to understand both the theoretical and practical sides of instrumentation. “This helped me communicate more effectively with my team, ensuring that everyone is on the same page, especially when troubleshooting or fine-tuning equipment,” said Delight.

This improved communication has been essential in fostering teamwork and ensuring smooth operations at RIOZIM.

Flexible Online Learning for a Busy Professional

Managing a full-time job at RIOZIM while balancing family commitments and furthering his education could have been a daunting task for Delight, but EIT’s online learning format made this possible. One of the stand-out features of the course was its flexibility, which allowed him to study at his own pace, without compromising his work or family life.

The course structure provided a well-rounded educational experience that suited his needs. The reading materials were comprehensive and offered in-depth coverage of instrumentation and process control. In addition, the course provided supplementary resources on Moodle (EIT’s Learning Management System), which he found to be highly beneficial. These additional materials helped him reinforce what he learned and provided clarity on difficult concepts.

Live webinars played a crucial role in his learning experience. Delight was able to attend these sessions at times that suited his schedule, which was critical for someone with his busy lifestyle.

“The flexibility of the live sessions was very helpful. I could attend them when it was convenient for me, and I could always go back and watch the recordings if I needed a refresher,” he shared. This ability to revisit content allowed him to digest complex topics more thoroughly, enhancing his overall understanding.

“The course exceeded my expectations in how well it was structured and how much I could get out of it, despite having a busy schedule,” he said.

This online approach allowed him to continue learning without disrupting his professional or personal life, demonstrating the effectiveness of EIT’s flexible model.

Contributing to Zimbabwe’s Evolving Engineering Sector

Delight’s role at RIOZIM places him at the heart of Zimbabwe’s energy challenges, where he is contributing to the country’s evolving engineering sector. Zimbabwe has faced energy shortages and frequent power outages, and industries have increasingly turned to energy-saving solutions.

As an engineer in the mining and energy sectors, Delight is instrumental in implementing measures that help RIOZIM manage its energy consumption more efficiently. His work involves the design and installation of systems that ensure energy reliability and cost-effectiveness.

A significant part of his responsibilities includes managing uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) for critical equipment, performing power factor correction, and overseeing energy consumption across different departments.

“In Zimbabwe, with the constant power outages and load shedding, it’s crucial to implement systems that help maintain consistent power for critical processes,” he explained.

His EIT Professional Certificate has been key in equipping him with the knowledge and confidence to tackle these energy management challenges. “The course provided me with the necessary tools and understanding to create effective energy solutions.”
As the country’s energy landscape continues to shift, Delight said is able to contribute to RIOZIM’s efforts to enhance energy independence and reduce costs, making him a vital part of the company’s strategy.

Moreover, the broader engineering sector in Zimbabwe is experiencing a transition toward more energy-efficient and sustainable practices, and he is helping to drive that change. “Energy independence is becoming more important as industries look to reduce their reliance on the national grid. My work is directly aligned with that vision,” he said, reinforcing the significant role he plays in shaping Zimbabwe’s engineering future

Certification and Career Growth: A Clear Path Forward

Since completing the Professional Certificate, Delight says he has seen a tangible impact on his career trajectory. The certificate has proven to be a valuable asset, not only in enhancing his skillset but also in positioning him for career advancement.
“It strengthened my CV and gave me more confidence to take on leadership roles in instrumentation and control.”

One of the immediate effects of obtaining the certification was an increase in his responsibilities at RIOZIM. With his expanded skill set, he was entrusted with more complex tasks, further developing his expertise in instrumentation and control. This newfound trust from his superiors has not only boosted his confidence but has also allowed him to take on more meaningful projects within the company.

The EIT short course has also helped Delight clarify his career direction. “It has given me a clear sense of where I want to go professionally. The skills I’ve gained have opened up new avenues for growth in energy management and process control.”
He sees the Professional Certificate as a stepping stone toward even greater career opportunities in the future, as it has set him apart from other professionals in the field.

Ultimately, Delight Kadzuraumera’s journey with EIT demonstrates how a targeted professional certification can play a crucial role in both immediate career progression and long-term professional development.
For him, the Professional Certificate was a turning point that solidified his role as an expert in instrumentation and process control, while also allowing him to contribute significantly to his company’s energy solutions.
