DE offers a range of transformational benefits across the full asset lifecycle of rail infrastructure projects, through the use of digital technologies and optimized ways of working. DE techniques are now commonly applied on major rail infrastructure projects, realizing immediate benefits such as improved design coordination, faster project delivery, and less project variations. That said, many of the benefits of DE have often been short-lived, hindered by inconsistent methodologies, a lack of interoperable data, and generally low digital maturity. Furthermore, there has been little consideration for aligned digital processes over the full asset lifecycle, resulting in limited reliability or re-use of project information beyond single phases of the lifecycle.
Most importantly, there have been no agreed DE standards or guidelines that define best practices across the ANZ rail industry. Rail agencies and asset owners have individually developed bespoke DE project requirements, with varying levels of detail and specification. This has made it challenging for industry to interpret and respond to a growing number of diverse DE terms, definitions, conventions, requirements, and specifications. It is now universally recognized by both the public and private sectors that an ad-hoc and siloed approach is not sustainable. There is a need for consistency, developed in partnership with the ANZ rail industry, to define and agree on a common approach to DE for rail infrastructure projects. Standardization will enable digital transformation and unlock a step-change in productivity throughout the rail infrastructure sector.
