Veronica Tembo, a determined single mother and engineer from Zambia, has achieved a master’s in industrial automation against incredible odds. Her remarkable journey stands as a testament to resilience, dedication, and personal sacrifice in pursuit of education and success.

An Unyielding Path to Achievement

Veronica Tembo‘s pursuit of her Master of Engineering (Industrial Automation) from the Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT) represents not only academic excellence but also a triumph over numerous personal and professional obstacles.

As a single mother of two young children and a full-time industrial automation engineer in Zambia’s mining sector, she demonstrated exceptional determination and unwavering commitment.

“This journey was not just about earning an industrial automation degree; it was about showing my children that no challenge is too great to conquer, especially for girls,” she reflected.

Striking a delicate balance between her role in a continuous mining operation and her studies was no small feat. She often studied late into the night after putting her children to bed, seizing every available moment to stay on track with her coursework.

Faced with regular power outages, Veronica encountered continual challenges accessing electricity and the internet. Instead of succumbing to frustration, she adapted by traveling to nearby hospitals and schools for power and connectivity to meet her deadlines.

“It was tough, but the growth and opportunities it unlocked were worth every sacrifice,” she explained.

Balancing Work, Study, and Leadership Development

Just three months into her studies, Veronica received a remarkable opportunity: she was nominated for the First Quantum Minerals CEO Program, a highly selective leadership development initiative.

The program required extensive time and effort to complete back-to-back projects assessed by senior executives. Yet, she embraced the challenge.

Juggling this prestigious program alongside her full-time role as an Industrial Automation Engineer and her studies demanded meticulous time management.

“I developed a strict schedule, dedicating early mornings and late evenings to studying and working on the CEO program projects,” she recalled.

A Triumphant Graduation Celebration

After years of persistence and sacrifice, Veronica’s moment of triumph arrived when she flew to Perth, Australia, to attend her graduation ceremony. The trip, funded entirely from her own resources, symbolized her unwavering commitment and resolve.

“The graduation represented more than just receiving an industrial automation degree; it was a celebration of the journey, the sacrifices, and the obstacles I overcame to arrive at this moment,” she expressed.

Walking across the stage to receive her industrial automation certificate was an emotional milestone for Veronica, a reminder of the late nights, financial struggles, and personal sacrifices she endured to achieve her goals.

“Receiving the Resilience Award during graduation was particularly meaningful. Listening to my story being shared and knowing I was the recipient is a moment I will cherish forever,” she shared.

Her children watched the ceremony online from Zambia, included in the celebration despite the distance.

“Seeing them witness the culmination of my hard work was incredibly fulfilling. I wanted them to realize that no dream is too big if you are willing to invest the effort,” Veronica explained.

Pursuing Dreams Through Determination and Focus

Reflecting on her journey, Veronica shared empowering advice for others facing similar challenges, especially those balancing family, work, and education.

“Believe in yourself and your ability to achieve your goals, regardless of the obstacles. Effective time management is crucial—plan your days carefully, set clear priorities, and don’t hesitate to ask for help,” she advised.

Her motivation, she admitted, stemmed from the desire to secure a better future for her children.

“My children were my inspiration. I wanted to show them that no matter your background or circumstances, you can attain your dreams through hard work and commitment,” she said.

Her story serves as a powerful message about breaking barriers. As a woman in a male-dominated industry, she is determined to challenge societal expectations and inspire other women in Zambia to follow their ambitions.

“I wish to demonstrate to my daughters that they can achieve anything. I hail from a community where women are often seen as less capable than men. I take pride in defying those stereotypes and proving that women can excel in any field,” she affirmed.

Veronica’s journey is a compelling reminder that perseverance, resilience, and dedication can lead to extraordinary success. She exemplifies that with determination and a clear vision, anything is possible.
