Understanding the Importance of Concrete Testing in Civil Engineering

15 January, 2025
Concrete testing was recently demonstrated by Dr. Igor Shufrin, one of the Engineering Institute of Technology’s (EIT) Course Coordinators and Lecturers, providing students with a valuable hands-on opportunity to experience real-world applications of concrete testing procedures. Concrete Testing by Dr. Igor Shufrin This demonstration showcases the crucial role of concrete...Read More

Seismic Resilience of CRC- vs. RC-Reinforced Buildings: A Long-Term Evaluation

28 November, 2024
Corrosion-induced degradation in reinforced concrete (RC) structures, which is initiated within the first few decades of their lifespan, significantly challenges their seismic resilience and resistance. While existing research tools can assess performance, they fall short in predicting changes in seismic resistance resulting from alterations in the core properties of RC...Read More

Evaluation of Existing Reinforced Concrete Buildings for Seismic Retrofit through External Stiffening: Limit Displacement Method

4 September, 2024
This study introduces an alternative approach to the assessment of the earthquake resistance of existing buildings and the evaluation of the requirements for seismic retrofit through external stiffening. Instead of assessing individual structural components, we evaluate the entire building using a nonlinear static pushover analysis. Earthquake resistance of the building...Read More

Environmentally Friendly Smart Construction—Review of Recent Developments and Opportunities

27 November, 2023
Modern economic, social and environmental challenges require a new type of construction that ensures resilience, low construction costs and ease of maintenance. Material production, manufacturing of structural elements and final assembly should minimise the environmental impacts, such as greenhouse emissions and waste production. This review aims to identify the key...Read More
