On 7 December 2023, at the CedarWoods of Sandton, the Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT) held a graduation ceremony that brought together proud graduates from the vocational and higher education sectors, in leadership and across the gamut of engineering disciplines.
Terry Cousins, with a long and trusted relationship with EIT – an instructor and Academic Board member – was the master of ceremonies (MC).
His charismatic and personable style resonated with the graduates, guests, and distinguished speakers alike, fostering an atmosphere of celebration and achievement. Cousins played a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless flow of the event, infusing it with energy, warmth, and a touch of humor, making the graduation ceremony a truly memorable occasion for all in attendance.
The fields represented during this graduation spanned a spectrum of qualifications, including diplomas, advanced diplomas, undergraduate certificates, Bachelor of Science degrees, graduate certificates, and Master of Engineering degrees.
274 guests attended in person while 33 joined virtually. Of the attendees, 130 were graduates. The ceremony celebrated not only academic achievements but also the outstanding impact graduates are making in their respective disciplines.
Cousins emphasized the significant distances people traveled to attend the event. This resonates deeply with the dedication and commitment exhibited by both the graduates and the EIT community, underscoring the global reach and impact of the institution.

One of the standout features of the event was the remarkable presence of esteemed personalities, adding a touch of significance to the celebration. Dr. Bridget Ssamula, the CEO of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), and Tegan Brink, Australia’s High Commissioner to South Africa.
Dr. Bridget Ssamula has a wealth of expertise garnered over 20 years in diverse sectors.
With a background in civil engineering and a PhD in transportation engineering from the University of Pretoria, she has held key roles at global infrastructure engineering firm AECOM, including Senior Director for Key Accounts in the US East and LATAM region.
Passionate about mentoring, she actively strategizes and implements social impact initiatives, emphasizing skills transfer and small business engagement. Dr. Ssamula’s extensive experience extends to directorship roles on various transport entity boards, advisory positions for universities, cities, and states, and contributions to key projects like the Gauteng Integrated Transport Master Plan and the Growth Development Strategy 2040 for the City of Johannesburg.
She has received numerous industry awards, authored peer-reviewed papers, and demonstrated a commitment to advancing aviation in Africa.
Ms. Tegan Brink, a seasoned diplomat and senior career officer at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, assumed the role of High Commissioner to South Africa in January 2023, with additional accreditations to several neighboring countries.
Additionally, Ms. Brink served at Australia’s Permanent Mission to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva and worked as Counsel at the Advisory Centre on WTO Law.
Armed with academic excellence, she holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from the University of Sydney and a Master of Laws from Columbia University in New York, where she attended as a Fulbright Scholar. Ms. Brink is an admitted Australian legal practitioner.
In a unique segment of the ceremony, special recognition was given to EIT students through the Graduate Special Awards. Graduates were invited to nominate their peers for one of four prestigious awards:
