As an international student, she had to adapt to a new educational system while being far from her family. One of the most trying moments came in March 2024, when her mother passed away.

“I had to go back home to bid my final farewell to my mom, but I needed to return to Melbourne right after the burial to take a school assessment,” Cherry recalled. “My heart and mind were torn between staying with my family and prioritizing my studies. It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made.”

Despite the emotional toll, Cherry remained committed to her education and future career. Her ability to persevere during this time reflects her strength and determination. “This is one of the hardships and sacrifices that international students have to face,” she said. “It’s a reality we all have to accept.”

Balancing her studies with personal and professional commitments was another hurdle she overcame.

“Since my purpose in coming here is to pursue my master’s degree, it has always been my priority,” she explained. “But I was also able to manage my personal, professional, and student life well. I made sure to allocate time for work, studies, and spending time with friends.”

Gaining Expertise: Skills and Insights from the Program

Throughout her studies, Cherry developed valuable skills that have transformed her approach to structural engineering. One of the most impactful aspects was learning to use advanced design software like SAP, Space Gass, and ETABS.

“Learning new structural design software has had a huge impact on my learning,” she said. “It made me want to enhance my knowledge and become more proficient in using this type of technology. This will seriously help me to become better and more efficient in my job.”

Another highlight was her Project Thesis, which pushed her to new heights of academic and professional growth.

“During my bachelor’s degree, we had a group project, but preparing a Master’s Project Thesis was a completely different experience,” Cherry shared. “I discovered I still had a lot to learn, not just about my thesis topic but also about improving my writing and even using Microsoft Word effectively.”

Her thesis experience was filled with moments of frustration and self-doubt, but also immense satisfaction. “It made me realize that with hard work, dedication, and confidence in myself, I can finish my tasks successfully,” she said.

A Vision for the Future: Sustainable Engineering and Career Goals

Cherry’s passion lies in innovative and sustainable design, particularly in green building practices. She is deeply interested in incorporating sustainable materials, energy-efficient systems, and environmentally conscious principles into her work.

“I am passionate about the use of sustainable and recycled materials in construction,” she explained. “I envision a future where buildings are designed with circular economy principles in mind, prioritizing reuse, recycling, and minimal waste generation throughout their lifecycle.”

After completing her degree in January 2025, Cherry hopes to gain hands-on experience with local companies in Australia.

“I want to enhance my knowledge and skills further and improve my confidence,” she said. “I am eager to learn from more experienced professionals and adapt to the practices and cultures of the Australian construction industry.”

Looking ahead, Cherry aims to contribute to the field by designing innovative, sustainable structures that address modern challenges.

“There are so many dreams and aspirations in my heart and mind right now, but I’ll take it one step at a time,” she said.
